Abstract

This research investigates the impact of International Islamic Non-Governmental Organizations on humanitarian diplomacy in Nigeria, aiming to analyse their roles in providing humanitarian relief, fostering peace, and aiding socio-economic advancement within the nation. The goal is to determine how these organizations function as agents of humanitarian diplomacy, while supporting Nigeria’s national and international strategies in managing crises, especially in areas affected by conflict. The study utilises a qualitative research methodology, which includes analysing documents from NGOs, government reports, and academic literature, along with conducting interviews with relevant stakeholders and practitioners. This method offers valuable perspectives on the efforts of significant organizations like Islamic Relief Worldwide, Qatar Charity, and the International Islamic Relief Organization, which have been crucial in delivering assistance, aiding displaced individuals, and promoting educational and healthcare initiatives. The results suggest that International Islamic NGOs play a vital role in boosting Nigeria's humanitarian diplomacy by encouraging cross-border cooperation, strengthening relationships with predominantly Muslim nations, and demonstrating Nigeria’s commitment to humanitarian principles. Nevertheless, their operations encounter difficulties such as insufficient regulatory frameworks, lack of coordination with local agencies, and occasional redundancy in efforts. The research concludes that International Islamic NGOs are essential allies in Nigeria's humanitarian sector, possessing considerable potential to strengthen the country’s global humanitarian involvement. It recommends the development of enhanced policy frameworks to improve collaboration, increased transparency in NGO operations, and investment in local capacity-building to ensure long-term sustainability. Enhancing partnerships between government bodies and international Islamic NGOs further promote Nigeria’s humanitarian diplomacy and encourage inclusive development.
